On Tuesday, 20th Century Fox released a first glimpse of the cast and creators of “Free Guy,’’ the Ryan Reynolds-fronted movie slated for release on July 3, 2020. The photo shows cast members Joe Keery, Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, and Utkarsh Ambudkar gathered together. The film’s director, Shawn Levy, is also in the picture. The movie is currently filming in the Boston area.
According to Deadline, “Free Guy’’ follows a bank teller (Reynolds) who becomes aware that he’s a background character in a video game called “Free City’’ and realizes that he needs to save the game’s world when the creators decide to shut it down.
Comer, fresh off a BAFTA win for best leading actress in BBC America’s “Killing Eve,’’ stars opposite Reynolds. Her character, an avatar named “Molotov Girl,’’ works with Reynolds’s character to help preserve the game. In the real world, she is the programmer who created the game but had it stolen from her.
Keery, a 2010 Newburyport High graduate who stars as Steve in “Stranger Things,’’ plays another programmer. Levy, an executive producer and director of “Stranger Things,’’ is known for the “Night at the Museum’’ films, along with many others.
